. hello. thank you for joining us. our meteorologist howard says this is a code yellow day because of rain. and possibly stormy weather. so let's get right to his forecast. howard, what more can you tell us? >> we've had a few showers here

and there. steadier, heavier showers are moving in now. you see some heavy stuff in south central virginia. this looks like it could be making a b line toward southern maryland, areas south and east of washington as we get into the next few hours. your afternoon certainly is going to be impacted. out west, you get toward i-81, you may not be seeing all that much. look at the rains coming in through frederick to brunswick, from leesburg west and into charles town. there's moderate rainfall. this is all lifting northeast, even into central and northern montgomery county. you get farther south and southwest, south of warrenton, then we're just into general showers. sperryville its a little bit heavier. we have light showers now falling across southern maryland, back toward colonial beach and port royal and the northern neck. we'll be dealing with the rain showers on and off, maybe some thunderstorms for the afternoon. if you have outdoor plans, that could be a problem. one good thing today, temperatures are way up. we have low 70s now in town. 60s north and west. itas a mild morning.

for the rest the afternoon, these clouds will give way to some showers around at times between now and let's say 6:00, maybe some thunder. winds will turn southwest to even west to northwesterly. by 9:00 tonight, we'll be down to 60. drier air moving in. so it looks a lot better for the the next couple of days. full forecast in a few minutes. jc? we have breaking news now from silver spring, maryland. there is a report of a stabbing that occurred in a high school. it hammed at northwood high school located at the corner of alcoa avenue and university boulevard. this happened about an hour ago. montgomery county police say that the victim is at a local hospital but is refusing to cooperate. there is no word on a possible suspect. we're continuing to follow the story. we'll have the latest developments for you on our website on wusa9.com and right now we're taking a live look at

the school, northwood high school located at the corner of alcoa avenue and university boulevard. someone has been stabbed but we don't have details on the victim except to say that the victim is at a local hospital and the victim is not cooperating with police. that's a surveillance camera we're looking at right now. that's sky 9 they're telling me. that's sky 9, our helicopter. two prince george's county police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student are on trial today. video from the 2010 incident shows the student, john mckenna, being beaten following an upset game that took place with duke, the basketball team. the university of maryland was

playing duke. the officers reginald baker and james harrison have been charged with first degree assault among other things. they were with the police department's special operation division. baker and harrison right now are on paid administrative leave, but their police powers have been suspended. we will have complete coverage of the trial on our website wusa9.com. and of course on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. a 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a series of armed robberies that took place in college park. prince george's county police say that they arrested nico robinson at his home in greenbelt, maryland yesterday morning. he is going to be charged as an adult. all three robbery victims were

university of maryland students, and the robberies took place within an hour near the college park campus. the search has resumed for two virginia hikers who have been missing in montana's glacier national park. rangers and a team of volunteers are looking for the men. neal peckens of herndon, virginia and jason hiser of richmond have not been seen since friday. wintry conditions and 18 inches of snow are hampering this search. >> they did say that this morning the wester wasn't good, but that this afternoon it had started to break and they did have helicopters up in the air. he loves the outside, loves the outdoors, loves to mike. he loves to run. he's very physically fit. >> he's just a gentle giant, a wonderful person. we will keep our prayers alive. >> family members reported that

the two hikers missing on friday after they failed to catch their flight home from montana. both men work in veterinarian medicine. a woman pulled from a burning home in upper marlboro has died. firefighters were called to the 800 block of peach leaf court yesterday morning. the fire was put out quickly and paramedics were able to revive the 55-year-old woman before rushing her to the hospital. however, she sus cupped to her -- sus cuppedto her injury -- succumbed to her injuries last night. authorities don't have the cause of the fire but do believe it was accidental. the komen three-day walk for the cure raised more than $4 million for the research. the event concluded at the washington monument yesterday. some 1600 breast cancer survivors and supporters walked

60 miles during that three-day journey. they started off from southwest washington on friday. >> it was fantastic. got a few blisters. it was great. donate. donate. >> three days, 60 miles. very tired, ready to go home but excited. >> the event was one of 14 komen walks across the country. organizers say the washington walkers raised $3.8 million which was a lot less than what they raised last year. president obama and republican challenger mitt romney are getting ready for their final day before their town hall style debate. the candidates will be taking questions from undecided voters at hofstra university in long island, new york. susan mcginnness has a preview. >> reporter: workers are

getting new york's hofstra university ready for tuesday's debate. both candidates are also getting ready. president obama is hold up at a virginia resort focused on debate prep. he stepped out just once over the weekend to visit a campaign office. >> how is the debate prep going, sir? >> it is going great. >> reporter: that answer is much different than the one he gave when he was asked the same question before the first debate. >> it's a drag. they're making me do my homework. >> reporter: the obama campaign says the president will be more energetic this time around and the romney team is getting ready for a more aggressive opponent. ohio senator robb portman is playing the role of president obama during romney's debate prep. >> president obama will come out swipging. i think he will have to compensate for a poor first debate. >> reporter: mitt romney's performance in the first debate impacted the race. his favorability numbers among voters jumped and the polls tightened. a new national poll shows the

social security recipients can expect a little more in their checks. the government has authorized an increase of 1% to 2% next year. that's the smallest increase in 37 years. 56 million people receive social security benefits each month. cost of living adjustments are based on the federal government's measure of inflation. the government says consumer prices have risen less than 2% this year. well, the white house gate crasher and real house wives star michaele salahi is engaged. neal schon, the guitarist for the rock band journey popped

a preliminary hearing began this morning for the captain of the cruise ship that capsized off the italian coast. the captain is accused of causing the accident that killed 32 people. when he finally decided to order an evacuation, he was on a lifeboat and he ended up ashore before many ever the passengers. meanwhile, -- of the passengers. meanwhile the efforts to salvage the ship continues. that operation is expected to take at least 260 more days depending upon the weather. according to the census bureau, we are living on average to be 78 years old. that means that people are living eight years longer than they did in 1970. the quality of life, however,

may be challenged as people age. one nonprofit organization is serving the elderly so that they may live enriching lives for as long as possible. so today i'm saluting the downtown clusters geriatric day care center in northwest washington. >> good job. >> it's a good place to be because you sit home, you have no one to talk with. and here we become a family. we have games. >> reporter: iva enjoys a game of pig in the poke. >> it's like you're alive instead of looking at a wall. >> reporter: the 71-year-old says her doctor recommended the center so she would not be alone. >> we give seniors a new lease

on life in attitude and action. we give them hope and we give them a place where they can feel safe and stimulated. >> reporter: the organization serves the district's elderly for free. participants can take physical therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, and there are workshops for those with alzheimer's disease. >> pick out a good one. >> i love to do art. >> reporter: 70-year-old charles thomas brightens up when he paints his wooden plain. he also gets physical therapy. >> i get a chance to work my body parts, keep myself in shape. >> we're a voice for those who are functionally impaired. we want to send a resounding message that they matter too. just because a person may be impaired, it doesn't mean that their quality of life has to be compromised. >> the downtown clusters geriatric day care center is

open to d.c. residents who are 60 years and older. if you would like more information, go to my website jchayward.com. howard is here. it's a yellow day. >> yes. we issue those yellow alert days when weather going to be an inconvenience, a nuisance. not severe. not severe but enough where your plants could be impacted, your commute extended and that's what we're dealing with for itself afternoon, especially with some of the rain going on right now. not so much in d.c. but just north and west. we have the day plan other this yellow alert. showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two will be around for the afternoon into early this evening. in fact, late this afternoon, areas out west will start to dry out. we may even be seeing the stuff wind down here by 4:00, 5:00 or so. then as we get into the evening hours, the front is going to push through. winds will southwest to we were. that will bring in -- to westerly. that will bring in drier air. by 9:00 we're down to 60. overnight we'll fall to 50 in town. closer to the lower 40s north

and west. we've been watching a cold front head this way. out ahead of it clouds this morning. we had a couple of sun breaks with an awesome sunrise. then we have these batches of showers pushing through. i'll switch it over now to the doppler view. you can see just north and west of d.c. we'll go up 270 upper montgomery county from poolesville to dickerson to tuscarora and out 340 and jefferson seeing it. loudoun county, especially west of 15 seeing some of these heavier showers. back toward aldie and upperville. look at this just outside of fauquier county going west on 66. all of this is moving northeast from warrenton south we have heavier showers and lighter stuff from charms and st. mary's -- charles and st. mary's counties coming out of virginia. it's going to be somewhat active with the rain and maybe a rumble or to of thunder. temperatures in the low to mid- 60s. we're still 72 in town. 73 in reedville and 70 in newland from our weather

watchers. outside on our michael & son weather camera, cloudy skies. 72 here at the noon hour with winds south, southwest at 14. that's bringing in the low level moisture. it's also bringing in some of the warmth we've had where nighttime temperatures stayed in the 60s. you can see a wider picture, a push of the showers and some isolated thunder moving north and east. behind it cooler, drier air coming in behind the front. that's what's going to move in for tonight. south and east of town we're also worried about the threat, maybe a strong thunderstorm or two especially -- actually, this is even better news. earlier this was in southern maryland. not really concerned about the severe weather threat. that's good. but we are looking at some nice weather once we get past today. today the yellow alert, 73. scattered showers. isolated thunder for the afternoon but nicer tonight as we dip into the 40s to around 50. cool tomorrow but a good day, 66. a few clouds mixing in with the sun wednesday, 70. thursday also looks good, low 70s. by friday maybe some more showers, upper 60s.

today i'm one on one with to of my favorite people, katherine and sophie. everybody knows that i love cupcakes. and of course they're the owners of georgetown cupcake. it's been five years. time has flown, hasn't it? >> it really has. >> of course we know that katherine got married. guess what? katherine's having a little jaqueline. i don't know. we don't know whether it's a girl or a boy, but the baby's due in january. but one of the things that you are very happy about is your new book. it is called sweet celebrating. and it has lots of things. it has your wedding pictures and it has recipes.

>> it's full of recipes and decorating tips for every occasion from weddings to baby showers to thanksgiving and halloween and christmas. it's perfect. >> great book. it came out when? >> last tuesday. it's brand new. >> hot off the press. >> exactly. >> speaking of halloween, that's what we're talking about today. we're going to decorate some halloween cupcakes? >> we're going to make our monster face tye dye dozen. you can find the recipe in the book. it's very easy. >> it's very interactive. all you have to do is take the batter, divide is in four. use a little food coloring. >> add a couple of food color to the batter, mix it all up. >> all you want to do is layer it into one little well. >> look at these cute little -- if you don't have the scoops, then just use a spoon. >> exactly. there's no perfect way to do this so you just layer them like this. >> when you bake it in the oven

it comes out tye dye like this. you can have your kids mix and match. we'll make monster faces. you'll take nonzit which you can get at michaels -- take fondif which you can get at michaels. go around. make a circle. >> you just take a plastic bag? >> a zip lock bag. put the nose on right there. >> we'll cut up some black licorice, scary eyebrows. >> put jelly beans around the edges. >> they look super cute. >> the finished ones are right over there. >> look at these. they're wonderful. it's not difficult and it's fun for the kids to make. >> totally. >> then of course you have your regular cupcakes. i don't know which one i'm going to start with. i like them all.
